Terrebonne and the 450: a ring, not a suburb

Terrebonne is 450, 579 or 354, the same three codes as Longueuil, Granby and Saint-Jérôme. That is the useful fact about the north crown: 450 is not a suburb code. It is a regional identity stretched around a ring so wide that no caller can guess a town from it.

The Canadian Numbering Administrator describes this territory as the area surrounding Montréal, which is a careful phrase and worth taking literally. It is not the northern suburbs. It is the ring, the whole way around: the north crown, Laval, the south shore and the Montérégie out to Granby. Every one of those carries the same three codes, which is why Laval is a 450 and not a 514, why Longueuil on the south shore reads the same as Terrebonne, and why Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is indistinguishable from both on a call display.

Look at that ring and the mistake becomes obvious. Saint-Jérôme and Granby are on the same three codes and are a long drive apart, in different directions, with a city and a river between them. The administrator's maps show the shape if you want to see the boundary drawn properly.

An area code says which numbering territory a number was issued in. That is all it has ever said, and on a territory this size it is a coarse statement.

A customer in Terrebonne who sees a 450 knows the business is not on the island. They do not know whether it is around the corner or in Saint-Hyacinthe. The same is true of the 819 family, which covers Trois-Rivières, Gatineau and Sherbrooke together and reads as no city in particular.

Portability makes it looser still. A number keeps its code when the business moves, so a 450 on a truck may belong to a company that has been in Saint-Jérôme for fifteen years or one that moved out of Laval last spring.

If the code cannot say where you are, the words have to.

That means the first line of your greeting names the town, not just the company. It means your listings and your site say which municipalities you actually serve, in the order you want the work. And it means the person answering can say "we are in Terrebonne" without hunting for it.

None of that is a phone setting. It is script, and it is the cheapest thing on this page to fix: see the six messages every business needs for the wording that carries it.

Whichever has stock the day the number is issued. 450 came first in June 1998. 579 was laid over it in August 2010 and 354 in October 2022, each because the codes already in service were running short.

All three cover the same ring, all three dial as ten digits, and none of them is read as more or less local than the others by anybody outside the numbering business. If you want the families set out side by side, they are in Quebec's area codes and in the rest of Quebec area codes.
