Business phone in Laval: 450, not 514

Laval is not a 514. Île Jésus sits in the 450 family, with 579 and 354 beside it, and it has since June 1998. It is the single most common mistake in a Quebec area-code list, and it is an easy one to make: Laval is an island next to an island, ten minutes from the city.

In June 1998 a new code was split off from 514. The Canadian Numbering Administrator's own description of the event is exact: 514 is retained for the Montreal area, 450 for the area surrounding Montreal. The line followed the island of Montréal, not the metropolitan region, and Laval fell on the outside of it.

Two overlays have landed on 450 since. 579 in August 2010, 354 in October 2022. Both cover the same ground, so a Laval number today is a 450, a 579 or a 354.

The same three codes run right around the ring, which is why a Laval number reads on a call display exactly like one from Longueuil on the south shore, Terrebonne on the north crown or Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the Montérégie.

Not in the phone system. It shows up in the paperwork around it, and usually in three places.

A customer list sorted by area code, where every Laval account has been filed under Montréal or under "other" depending on who did the sorting. A line on your site or your van that says you serve the 514, when half your work is north of the river. And a supplier quote that offers you "a 514 for Laval" as though it were the local option.

None of those break a call. They quietly misdescribe your own market to you, which is worse, because you make decisions from that description.

You can hold a number from any family, and some providers will offer you one. It is a choice rather than a trick. It is just a weaker choice than it was ten years ago, for two reasons.

The first is supply. A plain 514 is effectively gone, so what is actually on offer is a 438 or a 263. Neither of those reads as more familiar to a Montréal customer than a 450 does, and one of them is newer than the overlay you would be leaving behind. The Montréal codes are worth reading in order.

The second is your own market. To everyone who lives in Laval, 450 is home. You would be trading the code your neighbours recognise for one your Montréal customers may not.

Ten-digit local dialling became mandatory in 450, 514 and 438 in 2006, and it is universal across Quebec now. Every caller dials the code and every call display shows it.

That is also why the mistake survives. A code says which numbering territory a number was issued in, and portability means it keeps saying that after the business moves. If you want the full picture of which family covers what, start with Quebec's area codes or the whole of Quebec area codes.
