Drummondville business phone: 819, not 514

Drummondville is issued numbers in 819, 873 or 468. Drive an hour west on Autoroute 20 and you are in the 450 family, with 579 and 354 over it. The boundary between two numbering territories runs past the town, and it is marked by absolutely nothing you can see.

The Canadian Numbering Administrator groups Drummondville with Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke, Gatineau, Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or, on 819 and its two overlays. Saint-Hyacinthe, Granby and Longueuil are in the other one, on 450 and its two overlays. Neither Montréal (514, 438, 263) nor Québec City (418, 581, 367) is in either. Sherbrooke is filed as northwestern Quebec too, 40 km from Vermont, and Gatineau carries the same three codes against the Ontario border.

A new line here will be an 873 or a 468. The 819 pool is exhausted, and all three codes cover the same ground and dial the same way.

A contractor based here will quote a job in Saint-Hyacinthe and a job in Victoriaville in the same week, drive similar distances to both, charge the same rates, and be reachable on the same phone. To the numbering plan, one of those customers is in your territory and one is not.

That difference is an administrative artefact from a boundary drawn in 1957 and adjusted since. It does not track a labour market, a chamber of commerce, a media market or anybody's buying habits, so it is a poor thing to build a strategy on. It does one job: it decides what shows on a call display before you pick up.

Nothing, and this is the fact that explains why the code is such a weak signal.

A number is issued out of a block on a code and then belongs to your account. On a cloud system it is not attached to a street address, a building or a piece of copper. Move your shop from Drummondville to Saint-Hyacinthe and your 819 stays an 819. It also moves with you between providers, which is a separate mechanism and the reason nobody should give up a number they have had for a decade.

So over time the codes drift away from the map. An area code records the numbering territory a number was issued in, not where the business is today, and every move and every port widens the gap. Treat what a customer infers from the digits as a guess that is often wrong, including when they guess about you.

If you do want to be read as local somewhere else, buy a number in that family and point it at the same greeting and the same team. One call flow per number is enough, and the day the market stops paying off you drop the number and nothing else changes.
