Business phone in Sherbrooke: 819 in Estrie

Sherbrooke is in the 819 family, along with 873 and 468. The administrator calls that territory northwestern Quebec, which is a strange label for a city 40 km from the Vermont border. The name is an inheritance, and understanding where it came from settles what the code is worth to you.

819 was created in 1957 by splitting it out of 418 and 514. In 1975 it was extended to take in more Bell Canada and Sotel territory in Quebec, and Bell Canada territory in the Northwest Territories. In 2012 a second code, 873, was overlaid on the whole of it. In 2022 a third, 468, joined them.

Not one of those four events was a decision about Estrie. Sherbrooke shares its codes with Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d'Or, several hundred kilometres away, because a line drawn in 1957 happened to fall on the far side of it. It shares them just as much with Gatineau, pressed against the Ontario border, and with Drummondville, an hour from the 450 family. Note the third code. A lot of published lists still say "819 and 873" for this family. 468 has been in service since October 2022, and a new line in Sherbrooke can be issued on it.

No, and this is the part most articles get backwards.

Inside Estrie an 819 is what a plumber, a notary and a garage all have. It is the local default, so it carries no signal at all: nobody in Magog looks at an 819 and thinks anything. A code only starts saying something when it leaves the family it belongs to.

Where it does say something is outside. To a customer in Montréal an 819 means "not here", and to a customer in Québec City the same. It does not say Abitibi and it does not say Estrie. It says elsewhere, which is a weak and mostly harmless signal.

If your customers are in Estrie, that is the end of the matter. Your number is fine, and it moves with you if you change providers.

A second number is display. It is cheap, it is reversible, and it is not free. So the test is narrow: are you advertising to strangers in a market you do not already have?

Yes, and you are spending money to reach them. Buy the number for that market. A 514 on the Montréal landing page, on the vehicle that works there, on the directory listing that market reads. Point it at the same greeting and the same team, and give it its own opening line so you know which market called.

No, your work there comes from referrals. Do not buy it. Somebody who was told to call you will call you. A second number adds a monthly line, another greeting to keep current and another number to reprint when something changes, in exchange for an impression nobody was going to form.

You are not sure. Wait. The number can be added later without touching anything you already have, and a market that has not produced a single lead does not need a phone number yet.

This is the opposite conclusion from the one a business in the Mauricie usually reaches, where being halfway between two markets makes the second number pay for itself quickly. Estrie is a market in its own right. Sherbrooke firms mostly do not need to look like they are somewhere else.
