Business phone in Saguenay: what 418 covers

Saguenay shares 418, 581 and 367 with Québec City, 200 km away. An area code is a numbering territory rather than a neighbourhood, and that has consequences.

Saguenay is in the 418 family, along with 581 and 367. So is Québec City, about 200 km away, and so are Rimouski and Gaspé. An area code names a numbering territory, not a town, and this one is roughly the eastern half of the province.

That single fact settles most of the questions people ask about local numbers here.

What the 418 family actually covers

The Canadian Numbering Administrator calls it the Northeast Quebec area including Quebec City, and it takes in Québec, Lévis, Saguenay, Rimouski, Sept-Îles and Gaspé, plus everything between them. Three codes serve all of it: 418 from 1947, 581 from 2008, 367 from 2018.

The same three codes cover every place on the band. The one thing they tell a customer is on the left; everything they cannot is on the right.

There is no Saguenay code and no Lac-Saint-Jean code. There is no way to buy one, at any price, from any provider, because none exists to sell.

An area code is a territory, not a neighbourhood

A business owner in Chicoutimi usually assumes a 418 reads as "one of us" to a customer in Alma. It does, but so does a 418 belonging to a company in Lévis that has never sent anybody north of Stoneham. Québec City is issued out of the same 418, 581 and 367, and so is every other place on the band.

The code carries exactly one piece of information: this number was issued somewhere in eastern Quebec. It cannot say which town, whether you are open, who answers or in which language. Those are four things a caller cares about far more, and all four are yours to set.

This is the opposite of the problem a business in the Mauricie has, where 819 puts you outside the two markets you sell into. Here the code puts you inside a market so large that it stops distinguishing you at all.

What tells a customer you are actually in Saguenay

Four things, in the order a caller meets them.

The greeting. Name the company and the city in the first five seconds. "Bonjour, Plomberie Untel, Chicoutimi" does in six words what no area code can do at all.

The hours. Set them in your own timezone and match your real schedule, so a call at 07:30 is met by whatever you actually do at 07:30 rather than by a machine pretending you are open.

The person. Somebody local answering is the whole claim. Everything else is packaging.

The second number, if and only if you sell elsewhere. If you also chase work in Montréal, a 514 advertised there is worth having, and both numbers can land in the same greeting and the same team. Inside 418 a second number buys you nothing, because you are already in the only family there is. The rest of the picture is in Quebec's area codes.

What we are, and what we are not

We supply numbers in 418, 581 and 367, and in the other families if your market runs wider. We set them up by hand with you; there is no page where you buy a number yourself.

We have no office in Saguenay, or anywhere else in Quebec. Service is remote, there is no installation visit, and nobody drives to Chicoutimi or Jonquière. Call data is hosted in the United States rather than in Canada, which is worth knowing before you decide.

The region has installers who do come out. If that is what you need, it is not us. If remote suits you, tell us where your customers actually are and we pick the codes with you.

Questions people ask

Which area code covers Saguenay?
418, with 581 and 367 overlaid on the same ground. It is the same family that covers Québec City, Lévis, Rimouski, Sept-Îles and Gaspé. There is no code specific to Saguenay or to Lac-Saint-Jean, and there never has been.
Can I get a number that says Saguenay rather than just 418?
Not through the area code. The three digits identify a numbering territory that stretches from Québec City to the Gaspé, so nothing in them narrows to a city. What narrows it is the exchange, the middle three digits, and no customer reads those. If you want a caller to know where you are, the greeting has to say it.
Would a second number help me look local in Chicoutimi and Jonquière?
No, because both are already inside the same territory as every other number you could be issued. A second number is only worth buying when it puts you in a family you are not in, such as a 514 for Montréal or an 819 for the Mauricie. Inside 418 it buys nothing.
Does a Saguenay customer treat a Québec City 418 as local?
On the call display, yes, because it is the same code. That cuts both ways: your own 418 tells a customer in Alma nothing about whether you are up the road or three hours away. Presence is made by the greeting, the hours and someone answering, not by the digits.
Does Ringfully have an office in Saguenay?
No. There is no office in Saguenay or anywhere else in Quebec, no installation visit and no service on site. Numbers are provisioned by hand with you rather than bought from a page, and call data is hosted in the United States. If you need someone who drives out to Chicoutimi, that is not us.
